(Australia-NewsWire.Com, May 31, 2016 ) Sydney, Australia -- A Sydney-based pediatrician and lactation expert, Dr. Rose O'Briant says new moms suffer a lot "threatening" physical problems even after giving birth. Among those things are back pains that mothers suffer. O'Briant added that most of the time, these back pains develop during breastfeeding.
"Back pains usually occur when moms breastfeed," Dr. O'Briant said. "This is because most of the time, new moms take on the wrong posture or position when breastfeeding. It might seem harmless, but the wrong breastfeeding position could affect both the mom and baby. For the mom, a wrong posture could make their back weaker. "
O'Briant said that when a mom assumes a wrong position when breastfeeding, the baby is also at risk of developing colic. Colic is a type of indigestion or unpleasant condition in a baby's digestive system, resulting to prolonged hours of crying and lack of sleep. To avoid such problems, the doctor recommended using a nursing pillow.
"Nursing pillows really help because it somewhat lifts the baby's weight from the mother's arms, therefore allowing her to be more comfortable," O'Briant said. "With the correct nursing pillow, babies may also become more comfortable when feeding." According to the doctor, she has been recommending the use of nursing pillows to her patients.
"There are actually a lot of great nursing pillows out there. But I usually recommend Airbornbaby. It self-inflates, so moms can simply whip it out even when they're outside the home." Dr. O'Briant added that nursing pillows also lessen the risks of clogged nipples, breast engorgement and soreness in the breast area.
