(Australia-NewsWire.Com, April 12, 2016 ) Sydney, Australia -- Nail-biting has long been known as a sign of agitation, nerves or discomfort. However, a new study suggests that this seemingly-innocent habit may be a sign of perfectionism. According to the study published in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, people who compulsively bite their nails and perfectionism may have a link.
The study says that often, perfectionists project their boredom and frustrations by biting their nails, picking their skin, pulling their hair and other body-focused repetitive disorders. In addition, nail-biting may also be a tell-tale sign of obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, nail-biting may be a habit very hard to break through.
One can also turn to other, more productive activities that may distract from biting nails. According to Hydracol's beauty consultant, Polly Graham, people who learn and practice nail art tend to be happier and more creative. As mentioned, boredom is one of the reasons people bite their nails. Coming up with nail art designs, especially intricate ones, tend to satisfy the perfectionist in people.
Nail biters can start with simple nail art designs to prevent nail-biting. Gel nail polish tend to last longer that regular nail polish. But that doesn't mean one has to do a nail kit make-over. Old, regular nail polish will do. Products like Hydracol's Polish to Gel can transform regular nail polish to gel, ultimately saving both money and time from visiting pricey gel nail salons. Perfectionist or not, nail-biting is a rather harmful habit. Hydracol believes they can help nail-biter's break the habit.
