(Australia-NewsWire.Com, March 16, 2016 ) Sydney, Australia -- According to a survey conducted online last December via Facebook, millennials showed the highest concern with their social media presence compared to other generations, particularly their appearance in online photos and videos. The Facebook poll asked participants whether or not they would edit their photos on Photoshop or any other photo editing platform to improve their appearance before uploading them on social media. Around 73% of the respondents who answered "yes" to the poll belonged to the 18-24 age range, while those who said "no" were in the ages 40-60.
Gaile, one of the respondents to the survey, shared her thoughts on the issue at hand. "I personally think young adults today are a lot more concerned about fashion and style," Gaile said. "We're all following Hollywood trends, copying what celebrities do with their bodies and appearance, and we're all so focused on how society sees us physically."
Many millennials have the same opinion about fashion and style as Gaile. Case in point: Another study says young people today spend more than 3 hours on the internet. Most of these hours are spent on social media.
Psychologist Dr. Trudy Wight explained why individuals in the said demographic are overly concerned about their appearance. "People of these age are still trying to themselves," Dr. Wight said. "They are looking for ways to improve their appearance due to many reasons. It could be peer pressure or the pressure that society itself is giving youngsters these days."
"Physical appearance can be very empowering, especially if you like how you look, so in a way, it's how these young adults cope with their insecurities," she said. Some of the most popular ways that millennials are enhancing their looks are through wardrobe, skin care, nail art, and hair care. Beauty experts have also noted that their clientelle have shifted to the younger millenial generation.
Hydracol USA founder, Emma Grojnowski notes that many of her clients are millennials who have nail art pages on Pinterest and Instagram. "Our clients are mostly young people. Most of the time, they ask about how our products could improve their nail art," Grojowski said. "Suffice it to say that this generation is creative and very meticulous when it comes to aesthetics. It's rather an admirable quality."
