(Australia-NewsWire.Com, January 24, 2016 ) Brisbane, Queensland -- More and more pets are suffering from suffocation due to the incorrect use and wearing of harnesses, veterinarian Dr. Ashley Moss reveals. According to Dr. Moss, she regularly sees patients who have been victimized by poor harness use and excessive pulling from their owners. These pets, mostly dogs, may acquire serious injuries from the said problem.
Dr. Moss raises her concerns about this issue and shares the mistakes that should be avoided by pet owners at all costs. "Most of the patients I see are dogs, and many of them are getting suffocated by their owners. This is a common but very honest mistake which is brought about by the lack of information and education on the owner's part," Dr. Moss states.
She adds, "It is important to use a safe no-pull dog harness that does not cause suffocation or pressure on the pet. Most harnesses are cheap but they can be detrimental to the health of your dog. It is much safer to use a high quality harness that will protect your dog from pulling."
The dogs that Dr. Moss treats because of suffocation endured lacerations and bruises around their neck and abdomen. "It's normal for pets to get pulled because they tend to run around and chase things or people. Owners really have to take control of them through a leash with a harness. However, poorly designed harnesses are commonly used by owners and these are what cause the problem," Dr. Moss explains.
Dr. Moss recommends dog owners to also train their pets to stay in place and avoid running around, especially when out in public. She suggests, "One way to prevent pulling from dogs is by training them to follow in the direction the owner is going. This will keep them from straying away and getting pulled by their owners in the process."
