(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 12, 2013 ) Sydney, Australia -- According to a recent article on designbuildsource.com.au titled DIY Renovators Warned About Asbestos, AustraliaÂ’s biggest building and construction organisation has warned do-it-yourself renovators about potential health risks of mishandling asbestos during home renovations. This prompts a commentary from the CEO of Smarter Bathrooms, Andrew Crawshaw.
“It’s a timely warning since we are facing extended daylight hours and ideal weather to work on home renovations. Sometimes homeowners want to save money, or maybe they just enjoy the renovation work, but they aren’t necessarily aware of certain health hazards that they may be exposing themselves to if they mishandle certain things,” said Andrew Crawshaw.
“Mishandling asbestos can lead to serious health implications, so I commend the timely warning because it will allow people to be aware of the potential risks in advance. Then they can either hire someone else to handle the renovations, or educate themselves more thoroughly in order to use the correct methods of handling asbestos,” he continued.
The article mentioned that around one-third of the homes in Australia contain asbestos. When the asbestos is intact and in good condition, it does not pose serious health risks.
However, when materials containing asbestos are disturbed during home renovations, the asbestos can become airborne and cause serious health complications.
Since asbestos is good for insulation, fire protection, and strengthening other materials, it was widely used as insulation in ceilings, roofs, walls, and as a floor covering until the 1980s.
If asbestos becomes airborne and inhaled in significant quantities, it can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
“I agree that anyone contemplating renovation should consult a licensed professional to check out whether or not they need to handle asbestos. For the sake of your health and your family’s, it’s worth it to consult a professional,” said Andrew Crawshaw.
