(Australia-NewsWire.Com, November 14, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia- A city known for its traditions will be hosting a tour of homes highlighting modern architecture.
The self-guided trips, organized by Modern Home Tours, will include a 1955 home that was designed by a graduate of a Frank Lloyd Wright school.
A former managing editor of Architectural Record, Ingrid Spencer, has selected homes to feature on the tour.
“The idea is to present attendees with a range of beautifully designed houses, from modest to grand, (from) a few years old to just completed, each with their designer’s distinct vision of modern and each a unique environment,” Spencer told The Tennessean.
Modern architecture was introduced in Nashville with the city’s first skyscraper in the 1950s, said Matt Swinney.
“At first glance, you might be surprised at how many 20th-century treasures are in this city,” said Swinney, a co-founder of Modern Home Tours.
Architect Ryan Thewes says each house has a character all its own. One of his designs is black with a metal roof, intentionally stark, he says.
“It’s like a Monopoly house. It reminds me of those little game pieces, it’s so simple,” Thewes said. His inspiration came from tobacco barns of southern Kentucky.
Modern architecture is catching on in Nashville, said Thewes, noting that he is designing a modern house for a client in the suburbs.
“It’s spread out,” he said. “People are becoming tired of the usual.”
Ken Niermann’s house is in the Prairie style associated with Wright. The 2,900-square-foot home was designed by Bruce Draper half a century ago, but it still has a modern appearance.
“The home was designed in 1955 but still looks avant-garde today,” Niermann said. “This house, I really feel, is a one-of-a-kind in Nashville. The only Frank Lloyd Wright house here – a treasure.”
Modern Home Tours is based in Austin, Texas.
Tickets for the Nashville tours are $30 in advance or $40 on the day of the event. Part of the proceeds will go to the Middle Tennessee chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
