(Australia-NewsWire.Com, June 21, 2016 ) Sydney, Australia -- The internet is undeniably plagued with millions of acne myths, including ones about acne-causing foods. Among these alleged acne-causing foods are dairy. But is there truth in this? Hydracol’s skin expert, Sydney-based dermatologist, Dr. Jasmine Chan weighs in on the matter.
"Consuming dairy does not necessarily guarantee an acne break out," Dr. Chan said in an interview. "However, that does not mean people should go on an all-dairy food spree. There have been studies linking break outs to excessive consumption of dairy."
According to Dr. Chan, the study was conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology, which linked milk consumption to acne break outs and other skin blemishes. Dr. Frank Lipman, lead author of the study, said that the acne break outs were due to the hormones found in dairy. "Dairy causes spikes in certain pimple-producing hormones," Dr. Lipman explained.
The doctor did not, however, prohibit people from consuming dairy. Instead, he encourages patients with acne to have almond milk, coconut milk or rice milk to replace cow's milk. This statement was backed by Dr. Chan.
"Cutting dairy off your diet completely could lead to potentially problematic health problems," Dr. Chan said. "Remember that dairy is rich in calcium, potassium, phosphorus and other nutrients essential to us. Instead of swearing off dairy, find alternatives instead. So you can still have a bowl of ice cream or your daily dose of fresh milk. It's fine." Dr. Chan added that a balanced diet, regular exercise and complete hours of sleep can reduce the risks of developing severe acne.
