(Australia-NewsWire.Com, October 13, 2014 ) Seacliff, SA -- Acne affects around 85% of adolescents, and 10% of adults globally according to the journal Dermatology and Therapy.
The researchers study paper Resveratrol Demonstrates Antimicrobial Effects Against Propionibacterium acnes In Vitro, which was published in the Dermatology and Therapy journal describes acne as a skin disease.
In order to test the effectiveness of resveratrol, the scientists from UCLA used the blood and skin cells from healthy volunteers to test the ability of resveratrol to inhibit the growth of acne causing bacteria. The volunteers were picked on the basis that they did not have any skin conditions that could adversely affect the results.
Although the benefits and negative aspects of resveratrol have been looked at many times, it has not been used in conjunction with benzoyl peroxide before. As resveratrol, a potent anti-oxidant, and benzoyl peroxide, a strong oxidant, it was assumed they would just cancel each other out. This has been shown to not be the case in this study.
The study's lead author Dr. Emma Taylor said "We initially thought that since actions of the two compounds are opposing, the combination should cancel the other out, but they didn't". Which is very exciting news for sufferers of acne, as using these two substances together lessens the negative effects that benzoyl peroxide has on the skin.
Resveratrol, which can be found in chocolate, red wine and grapes "is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that has been shown to have antineoplastic and wound-healing activities," according to the researchers, after they analysed cells using a high-powered microscope.
The research is on-going, and more tests need to be done, but these initial findings are very positive.
David Harwin, spokesman for Distinct Wine Accessories, said "this is great research that could one day help thousands of people who suffer from this terrible affliction", he went on to say "I myself suffered from mild acne as a youth, and tried all manner of lotions and creams to combat it; with varying degrees of success. I would have greatly appreciated getting access to this new acne treatment back in my youth".
