(Australia-NewsWire.Com, November 12, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia -- The days of the leisurely workout are over thanks in part to systems that involve Crossfit training, which take the frills and pizazz out of getting into shape.
The system used by fire departments, the military, college sports, and teams around the world, Crossfit utilizes an array of physical fitness challenges to follow.
"I really do like them in terms of the strength and the challenge," said Liz Neporent, the author of "Fitness for Dummies, said about the exercises." "Why not maximize your time? If you're going to do it, do it. Don't fool around."
Greg Glassman is the inventor of the Crosstrain system and a gymnastics coach who opened the very first Crossfit facility in 1995.
"Crossfit is more of a movement than an organization," Neporent said. "There's a website but it's basically individuals, gyms, and groups doing it."
Crossfitters do not ‘visit’ the gym. Instead the jump headfirst into a Crossfit training center and workout hard, posting their regimens and results online in their “WOD” or workout of the day.
"Today I'm doing 100 squats, 100 pushups, 100 crunches," said Neporent, "which is about half a WOD."
A lot of people might think one would not even be able to walk afterwards. "That's what you have to understand about Crossfit. For some people it's aspirational."
Casey Kirch, a Crossfit East Village instructor in San Diego, believes the intensity of Crossfit brings about results faster than more traditional training regimens.
“When you’re working against the clock, you’ll work harder,” He said.
The burpee is a workout routine that illustrates the love-hate relationship Crossfitters endure in their WOD.
Starting from the standing position, you squat and put your hands to the floor, kick your feet out behind you, and then lower yourself to a pushup. Afterwards which you jump to your feet and jump into the air. The moves are repeated as many times as one is capable of doing so.
"It's a move everyone dreads," he said. "But no matter what someone's fitness level, if they do just a few they'll quickly build up to more. It's immediate satisfaction."
One emphasis of Crossfit is that there is little to no need for equipment of any type, and certainly not for machines. "We don't have machines," Kirch said. "We don't have treadmills or cardio equipment or strength training machines."
Instead, the ‘box’ holds squat racks, Olympic barbells, kettlebells, a medicine ball, jump rope, and tires. "Most things are based around body weight and barbells," Kirch explained.
The philosophy of Crossfit maintains an ideal of “scalability portion”, which denotes a philosophy that anyone at any level can benefit from the system.
"You go for time," she said of the WODs. "We know that when we manipulate intensity by adding variables like speed, people not as seasoned may sacrifice initial base form," says Exercise spokesperson Jessica Mathews, who said her maiden session left her with not only sweat but also a strong sense of empowerment.
"The environment was intense but not intimidating," she said. "They (her 10 session mates) looked like average people doing the workouts. It's a community. We're all in the box."
